H Moro4 Feb - 12:44

A successful weekend with thirteen wins, including the M1s and W1s, two draws, and two club derby games.

BHHC M1s 2-0 Chelmsford M1s
Patrick Ford reports: "The M1s first league game back after Christmas was against relegation rivals Chelmsford who sit just a couple of places above Brighton in EHL Conference East.

The game started very well for Brighton, with the ball flying across the face of the visitors goal on multiple occasions in the first and second quarter, but no one was quite able to get on the end of it to put it goalward. Some impressive saves were produced by the Chelmsford goalkeeper after efforts from Sam Rose and Nim Mudher were swatted away to keep the score even.

It was in the second half where Brighton seemed to gain more of a foothold. They were able to maintain the lion's share of possession and make the visitors work hard, thanks to their superior fitness after much hard work in training in previous weeks. This led to a penalty corner in the 50th minute. Tim Upchurch’s power finally beat the goalkeeper with the first direct drag flick of the game, and put Brighton into a much deserved lead.

Brighton didn’t let up though, and continued to attack down the flanks to much success as penalty corners continued to be won, and balls continued to fall loosely across the face of goal. Finally, Will Heywood sent an aerial down to Nathan Tyler, who put the ball across goal to a sliding Fintan Harman who tapped it against the backboard in the 60th minute, capping off a dominant performance from the M1s to start the 2nd half of the season. The M1s will hope that next week they can move off the bottom of the table with a win against Bromley & Beckenham away."

Epsom W1s 0-2 BHHC W1s
Megan McCaughan reports: "Brighton Women’s 1s made it three wins on the bounce with a composed 2–0 away victory over Epsom, continuing an impressive start to the second half of the season — and once again proving they enjoy a dramatic final-quarter finish.

Brighton dominated possession for long spells, patiently building through the lines and keeping Epsom pinned back like a team determined to camp in the opposition half. While the hosts did threaten on the break a few times, Brighton’s control meant chances were mostly coming one way. A steady stream of penalty corners followed, with the Epsom defence repeatedly asked the same question… and eventually running out of answers.

After a tight and goalless three quarters (apparently we like to keep things interesting), the breakthrough finally came in the final quarter. Brighton rolled out a tried-and-trusted routine — the legendary “Grace special” — which was coolly converted to give the visitors a fully deserved lead. Momentum stayed firmly with Brighton, and it wasn’t long before a second followed — this time courtesy of a defensive penalty corner breakdown. A great pass was fired straight up the middle of the pitch to Joey, who calmly slipped the ball through to Aoife. One-on-one with the goalkeeper, Aoife showed ice-cold composure to slot home and put the game to bed. Textbook counterattack. Chef’s kiss.

The match wasn’t without its frustrations, as plenty of stoppages and cards kept everyone on their toes. However, Brighton kept their discipline, stayed composed, and let their hockey do the talking when it mattered most.

The victory sees Brighton climb the South East Premier Division table into 7th place, underlining the team’s growing confidence and consistency. Hero of the Match went to Kayla, who celebrated her 15th birthday in style by playing a full 70 minutes. Showing maturity well beyond her years, she combined skill, strength, and composure to dazzle the Epsom defence throughout — not a bad way to mark a birthday.

With form building nicely, the focus for next week is clear: turn dominance into goals earlier… and maybe spare the coaching staff the final-quarter stress.

Goals: Megan McCaughan, Aoife Codyre
Hero of the Match: Kayla. Goof of the day: Meg (putting her skort on, pitch side)."

BHHC W2s 1-0 Guildford W4s

East Grinstead M3s 1-0 BHHC M3s

BHHC W3s 10-1 Mid Sussex W2s
Mirriam Almashat reports: "It was an eventful day for the W3s as we took on Mid Sussex 2s - and the drama started well before pushback.

Pre-match prep was.. questionable. Wan arrived freshly vaccinated with a typhoid jab, clearly opting for performance-enhancing drugs of the medical variety. Meanwhile, Jo suffered a flat tyre en route, resulting in Diva heroically abandoning her own prep to go and collect her. Strong teamwork before the game had even begun. The Brighton College crew were due to fly in from Open Day bang on push back and without Flo’s Mum heroically kidnapping her own child, we were in danger of having just 10 players on the starting whistle.

The squad eventually assembled fired up and ready - apart from Ellen who revealed she’d run 20km in a pizza shape three days earlier to earn a free meal at Franco Manca, injuring her Achilles and earning herself a prime spot on the sideline. Not to be outdone, Emma’s back gave up during warm-up (no one is entirely sure what warm-up she was attempting). Despite dropping like flies, spirits stayed high and the team pulled together.

Brighton opened the scoring with some lovely passing from Abby to Wan, finding Mirriam perfectly placed at the post to make it 1-0. Mid Sussex briefly pulled one back to level at 1-1, but that was short-lived. A short corner saw Alex at right slip with a slap to the left post for Abby in exactly the right place to restore the lead, before Imo did what Imo does best - a trademark baseline run - to extend it to 3-1. More slick link-up followed as Alex found Izzy, who slipped the ball into Jo at the top of the D for Brighton’s fourth. Unfortunately, that goal came at a cost, with Jo pulling her calf and temporarily exiting the pitch to join the congested injury bench, leaving Mirriam, Imo and Wan to hold the fort up front.

Defensively, Diva, Flo and Elena were rock solid, shutting down everything that came their way. Jess H had a surprisingly eventful game in goal, touching the ball once and somehow almost getting herself carded for it. Efficiency at its finest. Brighton continued to dominate, and after the ball came off Wan’s stick - already heading goalward - the Mid Sussex keeper kindly finished it off for us. Thanks, keeper. To round off the first half, Mirriam struck again in the 34th minute, sending Brighton into halftime with a commanding 6-1 lead.

The halftime chat was calm, positive and focused, and Brighton came back out hungry for more. Lovely passing from Beth and Abby found Mirriam on the P-spot to make it 7-1. Soon after, Alex and Wan combined again to find Mirriam at the top of the D, where she smacked it into the backboard for 8-1.

With morale sky-high, loud sidelines and a proper Brighton crowd behind us, the goals kept coming. A short corner rebound fell to Beth, who smashed home number nine. For the final goal, beautiful switches from defence through midfield and screens - Abby, Alex, Beth and Izzy all involved - worked the ball into the D, where Mirriam calmly finished one-on-one with the keeper to complete the scoring.

To top it all off, Jo made a dramatic return before the final whistle, immediately attempting to take everyone’s head off with a thunderous hit that flew into open space... sadly not the net, but the intent was there.

A 10–1 win packed with goals, grit, medical interventions, roadside rescues and classic W3s chaos. An outstanding team effort.

PoM: Relentless Wan. DoD: Pizza loving Ellen."
