Spencer M1s 1-1 BHHC M1s
Patrick Ford reports: "The M1s got the train up to Spencer for what would be a tense affair from start to finish. From the beginning it was an end to end game with plenty of circle entries for both sides and it looked like it could be a game to match the 6-5 win for Brighton from last year. However it took until the 2nd quarter for newcomer Alberto Martinez to break the deadlock for Brighton. A short corner variation saw the ball flicked hard at the back post for Alberto to tap into the goal after a touch off the goalkeeper.
With a valuable 3 points in sight, Brighton looked to attack and get a bigger margin. This saw an incredibly even game throughout the 3rd quarter. There were good chances for both sides, but Spencer probably had the balance of circle entries. It took until the 61st minute in Q4 for Spencer to get the ball in front of the Brighton goal and cleverly win a penalty stroke which was tidily put away by Neil Hamilton. The final 10 minutes saw Brighton create ample chances to win the game though, with countless 1v1s with the goalkeeper which just got away. This left both teams frustrated at the final whistle, but all-in-all a good game for the neutral.
Brighton have the opportunity to get off the bottom of the table next week, a win would put them above Wimbledon M2s with 12 points still available until the end of the season."
Holcombe W2s 3-3 BHHC W1s
Anna Whitworth reports: "Saturday saw the women's 1st XI make the long journey to Holcombe to take on their 2nd XI, a side we knew would pose a serious challenge, having only narrowly beaten them 2-1 in the first half of the season.
The challenges started before we'd even stepped onto the pitch. With key players missing and last-minute changes, a few found themselves playing out of position, and huge thanks to Megs, who answered an emergency call-up and stepped in without hesitation.
Despite the disruption, we came out with real intent, and it paid off in the first five minutes. Joey, who had dragged herself to the game despite illness, made a fantastic run around the edge of the D and put one in the back of the net to give us an early lead. Over the next two quarters, possession was evenly shared, and we looked threatening at times. Grace and Sorrel both had dangerous moments around the attacking D, while Kayla was strong through the middle, feeding and bouncing passes in and out of congested areas with real composure. Hannah controlled the backline well, and Betty was outstanding in goal, pulling off some incredible saves, but Holcombe had a few solid breaks and capitalised with three goals to put us on the back foot over the next two quarters. Aoife pulled one back with a rebound into the goal, which kept us in the fight, and we went into the final quarter trailing 3-2.
The intensity lifted immediately in the final quarter, and we man-marked tightly, pressing hard and forcing Holcombe into mistakes. Aoife continued to put in a tireless shift, making huge efforts to track back and help defensively throughout. Then, on a break from defence, Joey knocked one into the backboard to level the score.
A tough, hard-fought game against a well-drilled Holcombe side backed by a huge home crowd, but plenty of positives to take forward. The character shown in that final quarter to claw back a draw says everything about this team.
Goals: Joey Bryant (2), Aoife Codyre
Heroes of the match: Aoife and Joey
Goof of the day: Anna (forgot her astros)."
BHHC M2s 4-2 Old Georgians M3s
BHHC W2s 0-4 Reigate Priory W1s
BHHC M3s 2-3 Eastbourne M2s
BHHC W3s 0-1 Crowborough W1s
Mirriam Almashat reports: "It didn’t quite turn out how we had hoped. After lending players to other teams within the club, we knew we were going to have to dig deep - and although the effort was absolutely there, the result just didn’t fall our way. A big well done to Alex and Imo for stepping up to support the W4s when half of their team were on holiday - taking one for the club as always.
We started strongly, pressing well and working hard across the pitch, but struggled at times to get the ball cleanly through midfield. When we did manage to break through, Crowborough packed the D with numbers, making it incredibly difficult to find space or get a clean shot away. We earned a few short corners but couldn’t quite convert our chances.
The game had a real back-and-forth feel, with both sides battling hard. Crowborough travelled with no subs and worked tirelessly throughout. In the final three minutes, they managed to sneak one past us - a tough way to lose after such a close contest. Credit to them, they worked hard and ultimately took their chance.
At the back, Diva, Jess R and Flo were solid, shutting down wave after wave of pressure. Jess R made some brilliant leading runs out of defence and even pushed forward for an attempt on goal. A very well-deserved Player of the Match performance. In midfield and screen, Beth, Izzy K, Abby and Ellen worked by trying to link play and battling for every second ball, alongside Izzy M who put in a steady shift. Up front, Jo, Mirriam, Ali W and Sarah C kept pressing and looking for opportunities, but despite the effort and determination, we just couldn’t find that finishing touch.
A frustrating result, but let’s see if we can pull it back this week vs Eastbourne.
MOM - Jess R and Flo - Fantastic play, both of you!
DOD - Mirriam - For starting the game before the whistle."

BHHC Boys and Girls U10-U12 In2Hockey tournament at Hurstpierpoint College
Tom Clitheroe reports: "The U12 boys narrowly missed out on a 2nd place finish at the Sussex In2Hockey Tournament at Hurstpierpoint on Sunday.
Competing against 5 of the county’s strongest teams in the tournament’s main cup competition, the boys started with high energy and purpose against Mid Sussex, deservedly going ahead early with the two Harrys combining to open the scoring and finishing with a win.
More was to come against Lewes as the boys showcased their best passing hockey moving the ball quickly wide and with intent. Harry M clinically finishing with an impressive hat-trick. At the back, Arthur, Joseph and Patrick were composed under pressure keeping a second clean sheet in a row for the team.
EG provided a sterner test in their 3rd match but another powerful reverse stick strike from captain Harry M edged them ahead before EG replied with two quick goals. Our boys were denied an equalizer from a short corner with a fine save from their keeper on the final whistle.
Dusting themselves down the midfield of Noah, Oscar, Jack and Ethan worked tirelessly to win the ball and drive the ball forward giving Harry M the opportunity to add the finishing touches scoring twice to beat Horsham.
Hawks deservedly won our last match and the competition overall but not before our goalkeeper Hugo pulled off several excellent saves to cap a fine afternoon’s work between the sticks.
In between matches, the boys showed ingenious ways to entertain themselves which added to the tremendous team spirit all around!
Results: Mid Sussex 1-0 win (Harry C), Lewes 3-0 win (Harry M x3), East Grinstead 2-1 loss (Harry M), Horsham 2-1 win (Harry M x2), Hawks 6-0 loss."
Jenny Tasker reports: "What a great tournament! We started brilliantly with a fantastic 4–0 win against Eastbourne (Sienna 3, Clara 1), which gave us high hopes for the rest of the day.
Although we sadly lost the final three matches each 0–3, it certainly wasn’t for lack of effort. The girls continued to play their hearts out in every single game and showed just how talented they are individually.
Millie F and Fifi worked tirelessly in defence, with our midfielders, Sienna, Ines and Annabelle, running the length of the pitch throughout. Up front, Eleanor, Olivia and Clara kept pushing hard, despite having limited opportunities on the ball.
Horsham, Hawks and East Grinstead were very strong sides, particularly from set pieces, with strikers able to lift the ball from distance into the goal. It was clear how important match-play experience and practising these specific setups can be.
We were incredibly proud of their attitude, effort and teamwork throughout the tournament. Well done, girls!"
