Bara Owen reports: "After a few weeks of sickness going through the squad, we tried to stay focussed to face a tougher opposition. We were playing halves, which was not our preferred choice, but we had a plan. Brighton had lots of possession through the game, and although Horsham put our defence under a high playing press, our defenders remained calm and made it hard for Horsham to get anywhere near the D. Brighton had a few opportunities to score in the first half and came very close, but the score at half time remained 0:0.

It was a good game, with great hockey actions from both sides, and where Brighton kept the Horsham keeper occupied. It was Molly Beard who was able to put the ball past the keeper with a precise deflection from a penalty corner. Brighton were hungry for more and the game felt very chaotic for some time, with questionable decisions, feistiness and the tempo going up and down (this would be the time where a quarter break would have been handy). However, Brighton have been working super hard on their fitness so although we didn't score anymore, we managed to keep a clean sheet all the way to the end and win 1:0!

Hero : CJ - winning at home ground for another team whilst ill.
Goof : Bara - doing goofy things."

Horsham M2s 2-0 BHHC M3s

Middleton W1s 1-2 BHHC W3s
Alexandra Smart reports: "The W3s returned to winning ways with a dominant performance at blustery Littlehampton Academy. Amanda was so excited to get the call up from the 2s to the 3s, she merrily drove to Horsham, unnoticed by her chatting sat navs, Shelley & Ange. If only she’d read the 18 page match prep presentation. Beth did a sterling job negotiating the 34 roundabouts on the A27 – in the correct lane for at least half of them. Arriving on time does seem slightly futile when most of the team are incapable of opening a changing room door. Who knew that doors could either be a pull or a push to open.

Preparing for a 70 minute round of golf, we were delighted to see a brand new, divot free pitch had been laid since last season. We did a good job of preserving the turf, playing in our attacking half for 98% of the match.

Despite having most of the possession and more circle entries than glasses of red wine for Diva on a Saturday night, getting the ball in the actual goal proved problematic. With a helpful gush of wind, Middleton finally broke through our very effective press for a breakaway, winning a penalty corner and converting with a solid straight strike. 1-0 down and they’d only been at the other end of the pitch once. Oops. Thankfully Shelley’s nerves of steel saw her float past the GK in a 1v1 for a lovely goal that put us at level pegging.

Comms in the defensive line of Diva, Amanda, Jess, Alex & Flo were excellent – allowing freedom to move up the pitch and support attacking play. Georgie and Kelly were crucial in sending passes to effortlessly move the ball in and out. Midfielders Lisa, Beth and Rosie enjoyed acres of space and poached lots of high ball wins with excellent pressure on our press. Shelley, Millie and Ines were kept busy with the ball moving in one direction, expertly receiving balls into the D and almost scoring double digit goals. With a well paced ball from Kelly into the D, Shelley pulled off a Dutch international level deflection that had no chance of being saved. At last – we were actually winning.

Despite lots of shouting about keeping possession and game management, Middleton managed to counter attack twice in the closing minutes. Having had time for a nap for most of the match, Emily sprung into action, pulling off an insane lunge to save a great shot towards the bottom right corner. A final scramble in the D was kept away from the goal by Emily and cleared by Alex to the glorious sound of the final whistle.

With teas 15 minutes in the wrong direction, the team was straight back on the road of roundabouts. For Beth’s car, via Starbucks to find out what the difference is between a toastie and a panini. We’re assuming that Amanda, Shelly & Ange went to teas with Horsham.

PoM: We’re about as decisive as a group of drunk hockey players in a pizzeria.
Shelley x3 - for excellent deflection & great goals.
Alex x1 - excellent play, true defender.
Kelly x1 - great movement across the pitch.
Jess x1 - great stepping in front to win the ball and runs up the right.
Em x1 - for her wonder save.
Flo x1 - for having an amazing game all round, both distributing on the attack and critical tackles while chasing back defending.
Georgie x1 - super calm and great covering.
Beth x1 - no explanation soz.
DoD: Everyone in Amanda’s car for a detour to try and play Horsham."

BHHC M4s 1-0 Crawley M1s
"Hugh Parkinson scored with an attempt that was deflected in off a defender in a close game against an energetic and somewhat resistant Crawley side. The M4s made a few clear opportunities, but some of the passing was not quite on form, and a few players managed to earn green cards for stick tackles. The team managed to hold off several attacks and corners from the visitors to take three points.
MoM: Hugh Parkinson. DoD: Matt Hutchinson for some dodgy passes."

BHHC W7s 2-5 Horsham W5s
Marie Jarvis reports: "The W7s arrived full of excitement and ready for a battle against Horsham on a sunny Saturday morning. We were also delighted to welcome goalkeeper Ciara Hamill to the team for her adult hockey debut!

From the first whistle, Harriet worked tirelessly, winning the ball back and putting constant pressure on Horsham’s defence. Up front on the left, Heidi was relentless, hassling the opposition and making it difficult for them to clear the ball from their 25. Horsham continued to attack with intent, stretching our defence and eventually finding the back of the net after several attempts were brilliantly kept out by Ciara, including a superb diving save that set the standard for what was to come!

At the other end, Georgiana skilfully drove the ball up the right, creating opportunities with some lovely crosses and powerful drives into the D. Alex worked hard to get on the end of these chances, forcing the goalkeeper into some important saves. Our super subs, Cherry and Phoebe, came on and brought fresh energy to the forward line, mixing things up and keeping Horsham on their toes.

Anah and Finchy provided excellent support, finding space and giving the defence options to pass out and distribute the ball to the midfield and forwards. Anah also treated us to a few impressive tomahawks! Meanwhile, it was hard work at the back, but Elodie and Julia were superb on the wings, intercepting, tackling and clearing the ball to keep Horsham working for every opportunity.

The second half saw us really raise our game. Superb passing, movement and support allowed us to create several chances in front of goal, with two finding the back of the net! Harriet got us on the scoresheet, followed by Anah, rewarding the team’s hard work and determination.

Despite the final scoreline, the team worked incredibly hard from start to finish. The confidence, commitment and team spirit within this squad continue to grow, and it’s fantastic to see the progress being made every week.

And now for the star of the show… Ciara’s adult hockey debut! We’re delighted to report that Ciara thoroughly enjoyed her first outing in adult hockey, and we absolutely loved having her in the team. Her commitment, determination and skill blew us away. Those diving saves and fearless engagements with the opposition’s attackers earned her our very well-deserved Player of the Match award. But the recognition didn’t stop there! Horsham were so impressed with her performance that they awarded her their Player of the Match, too. What a debut! So, after Saturday’s performance, all we can say is… Abbie Wiltshire (W2s goalkeeper), you’d better watch out — Ciara is coming for the Ninja title!"
