Get fit for the new season, have fun with fellow members and help raise the club's profile

Fancy staying fit by taking part in one or all of five Brighton & Hove Hockey Club 'parkrun takeovers’ in the city in late July and August? Then line up for a Saturday morning 5km fun run in your club shirt (home or away) with fellow BHHC members.

The first one is on July 26 in East Brighton; the second in Preston Park on August 9; the third is in Bevendean on August 16; the fourth on August 23 in Hove Park; and the final one is on Hove Promenade on August 30. All BHHC members (playing or non-playing), supporters, umpires and parents of all ages are welcome.

"This is exactly the same as last year with members requested to wear their their club shirts for the runs," says the club's parkrun co-ordinator James Millar. "The gap in the middle is because of Pride. Bevendean is by far the hardest. Eternal respect for those who do all of them."

Parkrun is a series of 5km runs held on Saturday mornings (starting at 9am) in areas of open space around the UK. They are open to all, free, and are safe and easy to take part in. To register with parkrun UK is free and can be done by visiting www.parkrun.org.uk

Andrew Bromley, who started the initiative seven years ago, says: "The parkrun is a 5k fun run that loads of BHHC members do already; however it would be great to co-ordinate a few days and publicise the club some more. Parkruns are a completely free event and allow all standards of competitors to enjoy the 5k route together!"

It will also help with pre-season fitness or to run off any summer holiday excesses and get club members together in a fun environment. What's more it is free to enter - all you have to do is register if you haven't already.

James suggests BHHC runners should meet at 8.45am on the day of the parkrun and then get together for post-run coffee and cake, a chat with fellow members and other runners to raise the profile of the club.
