Brighton & Hove Hockey Club is saddened to learn of the death of talented 18-year-old Horsham colts goalkeeper Mia Craen, who was killed in a car accident at the weekend.
According to reports, Mia's Fiat 500 collided with a tree in Southwater on Saturday afternoon while she was on her way to visit her family's new house and she was pronounced dead at the scene. Sussex Police are appealing for witnesses as they look to establish the circumstances surrounding Mia's death.
Her mother Michelle described Mia as a keen sportswoman. "She was a member of Horsham Triathlon Club, Atlantis Swimming Club and played for Sparrows Football Club when she was aged six to eight. Mia went to Greenway Academy, Millais and Collyer’s, and also played football for Millais School. She was a brilliant runner and enjoyed cycling.
She said Mia also excelled as goalkeeper for Horsham Hockey Club. "She was destined for great things. She won player of the season twice, despite only playing for them for two seasons. She also played for Sussex."
Horsham Hockey Club has issued a tribute to Mia. "The club is very sorry to hear of the loss of Mia Craen who sadly died on January 30, 2021, in a tragic accident. Such a bright and friendly girl, nice to everyone, happy to help anyone and now missed by everyone. With much love, you will be sorely missed. All your friends at Horsham Hockey Club."
BHHC sends its sincere condolences to Mia's family at this sad time. Mia's brother Finlay has set up a fundraising page to recognise his "kind and caring" sister's contribution to the local community and around £9,000 has already been donated.
