Brighton & Hove's talented under-16 girls - the Cormorants - won the England Hockey Tier 1 Plate competition at Reading Hockey Club on Sunday afternoon in style, beating London Wayfarers in the final 5-0.
Brighton led 1-0 at half time thanks to a penalty stroke awarded for Amelia and converted by Emily, but continued to press in the second half, scoring four more. Nia turned over the ball at centre back, it was worked through the middle and finished impressively by Amelia to make it 2-0.
Katy added the third, coolly deflecting in a shot across goal, Izzy scored an individual fourth and Emily banged in a rebound after the goalkeeper saved to put the icing on the cake.
Clare and Richard Cook report: "The Cormorants brought home the National EH U16 Girls Plate on Sunday evening after a pulsating display of hockey in Reading against London Wayfarers.
They were roared on by the fantastic travelling support, which spurred them on to their most consistent and exciting performance ever as a team together. Each and every player performed to their best, and their attacking hockey and speed around the pitch was simply too much for the Wayfarers team, as Brighton ended up with a comfortable 5-0 victory.
The first half saw us largely camped in the opposition half but we only had a slender 1-0 lead at half time, but the girls remained focussed on the job and came out in the second half and were able to convert their pressure in to goals. Despite only having 13 players, they ran and ran, giving Wayfarers no time on the ball as their determination to return with the trophy shone through.
The supporters were loud and the girls were very appreciative and overwhelmed with the whole day. The whole team would like to extend their thanks to Graham for organising the coach, all the supporters who came on the coach or travelled under their own steam, Wendy and Sean for all their support and coaching over the year, Laura Davies and Claire Evans for endless patience and assistance with pitch bookings and umpire searches and also to all the umpires who have helped the girls on their journey.
Clare and Richard would like to thank all the above, as well as the parents for their unwavering support over the last few years, but most of all to the girls themselves. They are a wonderful team, they never give up, and it was fantastic to see them put in a near faultless performance on a national stage. The whole club should be proud and look forward to these young women continuing to perform in the adult teams, and push forward the profile of the women’s section of the club."
