Boasting a team of mostly youth players, Brighton and Hove headed to the revised location of St George's, Weybridge, to compete in the annual South East regional men's indoor tournament.
Andrew Bromley reports: "The event usually spikes interest in the early parts of the season and then falls foul to Christmas commitments/work party hangovers/rearranged games etc. This year was no different, with a vast list of interested parties becoming a mere handful in the weeks prior.
Luckily, the club has a fantastic youth section and we were able to call on the services of Max Turnbull, Theo Isachsen and Patrick Ford (plus Louis Patel for training). Their skills complemented the slightly older (wiser?) heads of Nathan Soutar (captain), Tim Upchurch, James Harvey, Will Buttress, James Rayward, Andrew Bromley (goalkeeper) and coach Jon Williams. BHHC were also buoyed by two permitted 'guest players'; Joe Farmer from Birmingham University (via Staines HC) and Richard Green (Staines HC).
The tournament didn't kick off in brilliant fashion for Brighton, as despite being on site an hour before our first match, we were not afforded any warm up time (unlike the rest of the teams) as the games were behind schedule. Therefore, we took on eventual runners-up Epsom cold and ended up losing 3-1. A very frustrating result given the circumstances, Joe Farmer getting the BHHC goal.
Our second match was against Addiscombe and not that we were warmed up, we turned it on. We managed to slot nine goals past Addiscombe in 20 minutes and it would have been double figures had it not been for an awesome goalline save from their PCD defender. This was a match where the full squad was utilised and the 'youth' made their superior speed and agility show, setting up goals for the older lads - Joe Farmer with four, James Rayward with two and one each from Richard Green, Will Buttress and skipper Nathan Soutar.
Unfortunately, due to our frustrating loss against Epsom, we were placed second and faced pre-tournament favourites Guildford. Guildford did their very best to let the good guys win by picking up numerous yellow and green cards for poor tackles and all round miserable behaviour but alas we couldn't get the win.
Guildford scored two penalty corners and an open play goal and despite a great corner of our own from skipper Nathan, a PS save right at the end by their GK cemented their place in the final. Onlookers confirmed that this was the best match of the day, with two decent teams going at each other for the full 20 minutes.
Guildford beat Epsom 1-0 in the final to enter the higher level indoor leagues but BHHC take away pride and great experience from the event. Fingers crossed we can find a suitable venue in close vicinity to the club to enable all BHHC members a proper taste of what is an excellent form of our favourite sport.
BHHC squad: Nathan Soutar (c), Andrew Bromley (gk), Jon Williams (coach), Joe Farmer (guest), Richard Green (guest), Patrick Ford, Theo Isachsen, Max Turnbull, Will Buttress, James Harvey, James Rayward, Tim Upchurch.
Results: Group - Epsom 1-3 (L), Addiscombe 9-0 (W). Semi-final - Guildford 1-3 (L)."
