Jack Jones scored a dramatic winner just 14 seconds from full-time to give Brighton & Hove a 5-4 win at Havant in a thrilling Men's Hockey League Division One South match on Sunday.
Brighton led 4-2, only for Havant to claw themselves level in the 69th minute. But after turning over the ball deep in their own half, Joe Naughalty and Sam Rose carved Havant open down the left and Jones found time and space to turn the ball in for the winner.
It was Brighton's first win of the season and a perfect response to the heavy defeat at Reading the previous week.
After Chris Borsoi had saved a penalty stroke awarded for feet on the line at a short corner to keep the first quarter goalless, Brighton struck with a fine solo goal from Ben Cooke, who made space for himself at the top of the circle to fire in a shot on the backhand.
Jamie Rawlings levelled for Havant after 26 minutes and early in the second half the home side went ahead when a break down the left led to Ollie Jameson touching in from close range.
Brighton enjoyed a purple patch, scoring three times in six minutes, to put themselves seemingly in control in the final quarter. Two quickfire Naughalty penalty corners had them in front and after a swift counter attack Sam Rose was left alone in the circle to touch in a cross from the right.
A speculative ball in from the left was turned in by James Speake to give Havant hope at 4-3 and in the last minute Scott Rawlings converted a penalty corner. But Jones had the last word to give Brighton the points.
Brighton's player-coach Naughalty was pleased to claim the three points. "It was frustrating to let them back in but I was delighted with the positive reaction as it could so easily have finished a draw," he said. "Getting a win under our belts is only going to help build our confidence further."
Brighton manager Jon Williams was similarly pleased. "They showed they had the hunger to want to win," he said after a much improved performance.
Naughalty played in a deeper lying role which allowed him to get on the ball more often and Josh Brown looked more assured on his second start. Mike Burney and James Rayward, making his debut, also did well. "The younger guys stepped up really well," said Naughalty. "It's good to see them playing with such confidence."
Before the match, Havant's former Great Britain international David Faulkner made a presentation to umpire Rob Jones, who was taking charge of his 500th national league match, the first to reach that landmark.

Reading showed they are the side to beat in Division One South this season, following up a 7-1 win over Brighton with a 6-2 victory over Teddington, while Southgate and Oxford Hawks gained their first victories beating Bath Buccaneers (3-1) and Old Cranleighans (2-0) respectively. Canterbury drew 1-1 with Sevenoaks, who Brighton visit this weekend.

Andrew Bromley reports: "M2 travelled to Sunbury on Thames for their first away game of the season a couple of players short (including one no show!). Nevertheless we warmed up well and started the game with the lion's share of possession; Tim and Nathan transferring the ball well with Oscar and Max.
However, Sunbury & Walton Hawks had set a press to totally congest the centre of the park, making it very tricky for our midfield to play. When we did make it through, Will was scythed down by their centre back (who bizarrely only got a green) and Antonio was chopped down for a stroke (sadly not converted). At half time it was 2-0 Hawks and frustrations were high.
Jon changed the formation and the change worked. Frustratingly Hawks got another grubby goal and our positive changes had been undone. However, this did change our style of play again somewhat and around the 60th and 65th minutes, Nathan twice found Bromley in the D who on both occasions laid the ball off for Pagey to score.
A tight final few minutes of end-to-end hockey but alas it wasn't to be. Bizarrely for a team winning 13-0 the week prior, we were pretty toothless! Hey ho, hopefully two good training sessions will see us overpower next week's visitors to Blatch, Oxted 2s."

South Saxons 3s 3
Hidetomo Moro reports: "The men's 5s waded through torrential rain to get a 6-3 win against South Saxon 3s.
The half began frantically since everyone wanted to go straight back inside. The 5s won a short corner and Alex Sanchez deflected in the first. The youthful Saxons side then got hold of the game and put pressure on Brighton and equalised. Warren Plaskett had a shot disallowed but was undeterred and put in the second. Brighton's passing was inconsistent and Saxons scored a second, but Sanchez scored again and caused problems for the visiting defence all day long.
In the second half the 5s switched on and some good interplay led to numerous misses but also goals from Michael Kyle and Ade Farthing. Tyler celebrated on the sideline with some press ups. A counterattack led to Saxons getting a third goal. As the half came to an end the attacks kept going, and a quickly taken long corner led to Bunny scoring a sixth for Brighton. Despite the weather the 5s took three points with great pride.

Crawley 3s 1

Tom Wolfenden reports: "It was so wet we chartered boats for the trip up the A23 to Crawley. During warm up in the pitchside car park/marina, Dan paddle boarded, Rob’s dry robe was envied rather than ridiculed and kudos to Roo, who arrived wearing full body luminous yellow overalls and proceeded to charge the arriving boats £5 each to moor.
A youthful Crawley team, with some talent and organisation, took to the field. Five minutes into the game, they scored the game’s opening goal - a long afternoon beckoned.
Captain Rigg, took a helicopter view, diagnosed the overloads and bolstered the M6 midfield. Soon the Crawley exuberance was reduced to a trickle. Momentum changing moments came flooding. Chilvers swanned into the D, got a shot away and Rev made sure: 1-1. Jack beat three in midfield to deliver a long pass to right wing, Roo crossed to Gareth who chipped over the oncoming keeper: 1-2. Rev made it comfortable: 1-3 and Rev again, 1-4 – well finished for his hat-trick. The coup de grâce: Gareth’s charge through the inside left channel to finish with a shot into the top of the net - an early goal of the season contender: 1-5.
With five minutes to go, the umpires judged the pitch waterlogged and no longer playable and blew the final whistle. As we aquaplaned home, the M6 WhatsApp pinged like a Peugeot car with water in the diesel tank. Roo summing up: “Crawley and fun aren’t words that get used together often – this day was both”.
