Former BHHC junior returns home to take "dream" role

Brighton & Hove Hockey Club is delighted to announce that Alex James has been appointed Coach of the women's first team for the 2025-2026 season.

Alex brings with him a wealth of experience both on and off the pitch. A former junior at BHHC, Alex has played in two promotion-winning BHHC teams, competed in the EHL Premier League and represented English Students. He currently also coaches at Southgate Hockey Club and will give valuable insights into elite level hockey.

Professionally, Alex specialises in building and nurturing high-performance teams. He is passionate about creating a strong, values-led culture – something that aligns with BHHC’s ambitions for long-term success. He led the recent series of junior workshops for the club.

"To represent my home town hockey club is the greatest honour and a dream come true: it has been 35 years in the making! Brighton & Hove is the coolest city and this is the coolest club," says Alex.

"I am excited to be part of the here and now and to build towards a fantastic future for our women's performance teams. It has been great to get to know the squad, which has a perfect blend of experienced players and juniors, and I am enjoying working with the leadership team of Bara, Bills, Meg and Jonny on our promotion tilt for the new season. A huge thank you to Cameron, the committee and all at this special club for the warm welcome, open minds and passion for what we can achieve together."

BHHC chair Cameron Heath said: “I’m delighted to welcome Alex back to the club where his hockey journey started. He returns with a wealth of experience, gleaned from playing and coaching with some of the best. I’m confident that the addition of Alex to our strong coaching group will drive the club forwards. I hope this can be a springboard to greater success, particularly for our women’s teams.”
