Leadership skills again played their part in deciding the elite players of the season in the Brighton & Hove Hockey Club annual awards at the club's dinner dance on Saturday night.

Adam Flett, the men's first XI captain, and Bara Owen, skipper of the women's 1s, were announced as the winners in front of 180 revellers at The Old Ship Hotel. It was the second successive honour for Adam, who led a remarkable second half of the season revival by his team in the national league.

Stewart Newton, the club's president, presented the Team of the Season award to the men's 1s to recognise both their performance on the pitch and their willingness to help with umpiring and coaching other teams. Other teams nominated for the President's Trophy were the women's 3s, 4s, 5s and 6s and the men's 7s.
