Brighton and Hove V Reigate
The U12 x 11 side team travelled to Reigate on the 30th October. This was their second match as an eleven side team and it was fantastic to see them brimming full of enthusiasm and listening attentively to Corinna’s fantastic pre-match briefing session.
The final score was 3-1 to Reigate but this does not reflect the improvements made by the team on looking up before hitting, stopping the ball dead before hitting and the team’s positional play.
Our defence quickly learnt that ball movement across the circle, or any hesitation, allowed Reigate’s aggressive and skilled forwards an opportunity to score.
Charlotte, Matilda, Leah and Nia had to clear to the sides promptly in order to protect the goal. Strong clean hits were needed at all times! Any attempt to dribble or delay was pounced upon.
Two balls did reach Jazmine in quick succession but her masterclass with Ed on Thursday paid off and she deftly kicked them away. Unfortunately a third attempt was not cleared quickly enough and despite Jazmine having kicked it clear once Reigate scored.
Brighton regrouped swiftly and the game moved from defensive to offensive with the ball moving into the mid-field and onwards to the forwards. The positional play and teamwork was much stronger than the last match. Maelona, Ines and Emily worked tirelessly to drive the ball to the Evies’, Amelia and Olivia. Amelia had a strike on goal but this was deflected. Evie P had another strike which went wide and it was a wonderful run by Emily, from the mid and into the circle, that gave Brighton their first and only goal of the match.
The team continued to drive the ball forward and there were more opportunities that unfortunately did not translate into goals. However the team play got stronger and stronger throughout the match and it as lovely to watch the girls have the confidence to tap back, and then drive forward into space, rather than run into the opposition.
Well done to Amelia, Charlotte, Emily, Evie D, Evie P, Ines, Jazmine, Leah. Maelona, Matilda, Nia and Olivia. Happy Hallloween!
