Men's 3rd XI - Match centre

Brighton and Hove Hockey Club
Mid Sussex 1s
Sat 20 Jan 11:30 - League Full time

3 is the Magic Number?

How many 3s in one game?!

3 – The 3s had the 3rd GK of the season between the sticks. Alex was given a warm welcome by Willmott who sent his ‘stock’ image to tell Alex everything he needed to know about the 3s. This certainly did not deter Alex who put in a solid performance on his 3s debut.

3 - Brighton 3’s scored 3 – Ed demanded a high press from the 3s against an in form Mid Sussex 1s side. Mid Sussex had beaten Hailsham 1s 7-3 the previous week and were full of confidence. The Brighton front 3 made it tough for the Mid Sussex defense winning lots of ball deep in the opposition half. This create a number of chances, however, the PC variations were not successful, and Brighton went in to half time 0-0. A positive chat a half time paid off and soon after Willmott broke the deadlock with a well taken flick from the top. Brighton continued to press and Jamie Hendrix had his stick axed by the Mid Sussex 5 years out. Dave Sheilds did not hesitate in awarding the PS.

3 – Ed scored his 3rd league goal of the season - With set piece confidence being at an all-time high in the 3s, it was surprise to Ed that he was the man to take the PS. Ed had only gone up to ask the umpire if Neel was able to come back on to take the stroke. Following a No from the umpire, Ed looked round to find the rest of the team at the half way line looking a bit nervous. Fortunately, Ed calmly scored, and Brighton were 2-0 up with 20 minutes to go.

3 – Dave Shields shows 3 cards in 3 minutes! Dave Shields was not impressed with a tackle put in by JC and decided it was time to (unusually) bring out the cards. An initial green was shown to only be upgraded to a yellow due to JC feeing the card was a bit soft! Within the space of a couple of minutes, Brighton were down to 9 as Josh put in a crunching tackle and out came the 3rd card for Brighton.

3 – Mid Sussex score 3 –Neel, Ninja and Willmott tried their best to take their time over side line balls during this period, but the umpires were not in the mood. Mid Sussex quickly scored 2 soft goals and with 5 minutes to go Mid Sussex took the lead. Brighton were back to a full 11 and still had a fighting chance.

3 - Pagie scored his 3rd league goal of the season – Having nearly thrown the towel in upon Mid Sussex scoring the 3rd goal, it was a surprise to see Pagie by the far post with a minute to go. The Brighton press was still in full force and this lead to a turnover and to ball making its way to Pagie who calmly slotted across the keeper to draw the scores level.

3 – Final Score 3 – 3. Once again there were a lot of what ifs and missed opportunities from the 3s but a positive fight back and some belief to earn a point against a top 3 side.

3 – It was 3rd week lucky with Willmott with the baking. The guilt clearly had got the better of him and he forked out between £20-30 to produce a delightful humming bird cake. Josh received MOM for a solid performance and Bromley was the maker of his own downfall revealing that he paid for a £15 taxi in order to get his match shirt from home prior to the game!

MOM – Josh
DOD – Bromley

Match report: Ninja
Baking Score: 8.77
