Junior weekend review - Goals from Dina F and Frankie K see off Chichester

Brighton and Hove's super Starlings notched up their 14th successive victory on Saturday in the Sussex Girls Development League - but only after surviving a testing game against a much-improved Chichester Canons side. It was a second 2-0 victory in a row for the Starlings, who maintained their perfect record this season.

"Having beaten Chi 12-0 back in October, we fielded a young team, with many playing out of position and with only one recognised forward," reports coach Amy MacDonald.

"We made a flying start with Dina F superbly finishing into the bottom left corner with only our second attack of the game. But as Chi settled, it was clear this was not going to be an easy fixture, despite the great start. The game was scrappy and swung quickly from one end to the other, with both teams having chances, but struggling to seriously threaten either goal.

"As the half went on we gained more control of the game, but couldn't quite find a finish. Tilly S came close, as did Evie P. Meanwhile, Chi had a number of good counter attacks, which our defence were equal to, and it was 1-0 at half-time.

"Coach Amy Mac called for calm and composure at half time and asked that the girls kept their heads up, figuratively and literally, and focus on their own game.

"The response was excellent. Chi continued to threaten, but our defence was solid throughout. Alice B and Alice M both had excellent games at sweeper and GK respectively. They each made a number of important tackles, interceptions and saves. Chi did hit the post twice, but Jess H at CB, Atlanta H, in only her second Starlings game and Lara V, playing in her first, swept up well each time.

"Our mids took more control and linked well with the forwards creating some excellent chances, but still we couldn't score. Marianna L, Dina F and Isolda R all came close, but Chi's keeper played very well and kept us out. We persevered and eventually Frankie K, having linked well with Maelona R and Tia L, got our second to make the last 10 minutes more comfortable.

"As always, the girls didn't take anything for granted and continued to push until the end and keep a clean sheet. It was certainly a test, but one we passed and the Starlings remain unbeaten at the top of the Sussex Girls Development League."

The Gulls were held 0-0 away at East Grinstead Bluebirds to remain second in the table.
