BHHC fall to late goal in final after strong defence of their crown

Brighton and Hove Hockey Club's over-35 women's team continued their run of success at the annual South Masters clubs tournament on Saturday at Woking HC, only losing narrowly in the final to a late goal.

Captained by Wendy Russell, Brighton were the defending champions from 2017 and a year earlier had finished runners-up in a combined team with Hailsham. Fielding a side this year with all but one player over 40, Brighton topped their pool, with three wins and a 0-0 draw.

They beat Woking in the semi-final 1-0 and in the final faced a young faced over-45s Teddington team crowned England Hockey Investec Masters Over-35 winners at the end of April. Brighton fought hard in an end-to-end game with both goalkeepers being called into action. Teddington, however, scored in the last two minutes, leaving Brighton to bring home silver.

Brighton are hoping to enter two teams next year so any women aged 35 or turning 35 next year should contact Wendy.
