Women's weekend review - Jo and Jenna give 2s victory in showdown with 3s, 4s hit six at Worthing

Brighton and Hove will consider themselves unlucky not to have come away from South Women's Clubs League championship chasers Wimbledon with any points, a 1-0 home defeat leaving them in the relegation zone.

"It was a fast paced game from start to finish, against second in the league," reports captain Amanda Billington. "Unfortunately an early penalty corner won the game for the visitors but Brighton put out a great performance; both individually (with lots of names added to the MoM list) and as a team with some very positive drives. We were unlucky not to take any points from the game."

With Reading 2s picking up a point in a 4-4 draw at Witney, Brighton are now three points adrift of their relegation rivals, who they meet at Blatchington on the final Saturday of the season, and have an inferior goal difference of six. This Saturday Brighton are at Spencer in their penultimate game.

The eagerly anticipated match between the 2s and 3s in the Sussex premier division was decided by a goal in each half in favour of the 2s, who remain hopeful of leaders Hailsham slipping up over the final two rounds of matches.

Victorious skipper Nivene Raafat reports: "The 2s and 3s faced off on a very blustery afternoon at Blatch. It was a hotly anticipated showdown, and the 3s had gone all out in their pre-game preparation. There were team bonding sessions, special diets ... the grey skies were even lit up by the fluorescent war paint daubed on their faces!

"The 2s started strongly, moving the ball at pace and trying to feed it in to Jo and Sumi in the D. But, like a Jedi Knight, Mary-Beth was there every time to intercept our passes. Hannah L, Sam and Kelly linked up beautifully to work the ball in and the 2s soon got on the scoreboard thanks to a signature Jo Whiting strike. The 3s then came into their own with some beautifully timed passes through to their high forwards, Christine, Ange and Wan. Luckily Amanda, Lauren, Han P and 2s player of the match Han E were there to clear it away, but the 3s definitely looked menacing once they got into our 23.

"The second half was a fairly even affair, with the 3s winning a handful of short corners and always looking threatening on the break. 3s player of the match Vaughny was talismanic in midfield, distributing the ball deceptively down the wings. The 2s managed a few creative plays of their own, thanks to Irish, Clare, Sumi and, of course, Jenna, who got on the scoreboard midway through the second half. As usual, it was hugs all round at the final whistle - one of the umpires even got in on the action! We all retired to the clubhouse for a few beers and an impromptu karaoke/dancing sesh!"

The view from the gallant 3s comes from Christine Cawte. "The famous grudge match of the 2s v 3s was upon us again… The 3s started their preparations earlier than usual with a team meet up/mass carb-load at Vaughan’s house on the Friday night. Pizza, pasta, tactics, song requests and a rather dashing tree frog later and we were pumped for the upcoming match but not before an epic motivational speech delivered by our MOM Vaughan.

"With Beth’s massive speakers in tow, we blasted out our collaborative Friday night playlist during the warm-up and even tried to psych out our lost long Sam Parker with a burlesque song she couldn’t resist tapping along to. As the push back loomed, the 3s were ready to put their heart and soul into the inter-club clash.

"Despite the 50mph winds, the 2s came out with skill and composure as we expected and made quick work of transferring the ball and driving it forward to our awaiting defence who relentlessly denied the pressure put upon them. Emily made a series of excellent saves in goal and the score lingered at 0-0 until a well converted goal saw the 2s gain the lead.

"What can be said of the 3s though was the passion and drive to fight back as the underdogs. A further goal by the 2s in the second half took the score to a respectable 2-0 where it stayed for the remainder of the game. The 3s had their opportunities and our trademark short corners were near-misses despite Smith forgetting the face of our captain and inquiring ‘Where’s Beth?’….to Beth.

"At the final whistle, there were friendly hugs exchanged between 2s and 3s as the rivalry faded for another season ... and an even more friendly hug was exchanged between Ellen and an unsuspecting (but very pleased) umpire.

"The 3s left the pitch feeling proud of the battle we put up and proud of the cohesive team we have become; from our defence to our midfielders to our forward line, every single one of us gave 100 per cent on the pitch. Special shout-out goes to our vice Wilson who sacrificed her own game so we could all play and was dynamite as usual with the strategic subbing.

"Back at the clubhouse, the 3s created a homemade karaoke session using the speakers which resulted in Sam treating us to an impromptu performance, Juliet’s The Climb going down a storm, us finally having a slice of lemon drizzle cake (although this was not made by El Driz aka Postie) and Ellen collecting a much-desired second hug from her umpire admirer and one from his mate."

An early goal put the 4s on their way to an expected easy win at division one's bottom club Worthing 2s but it was not until the second half that Brighton made their goals count, winning 6-0.

Ellie Hehir had her mind on other things, as she reports: "Packing my bags for South Africa was so exciting, after the disappointment of Bills leaving me at home and nil invite from Alice B and Lou on their respective ski trips. Finally Alice B pulled it out the bag and we were off to sunnier climates and beautiful pool side tom foolery!

"Weird meeting at Angmering at 9.15 for this trip but, with my trusty suitcase full of dreams, I went to to the very windy pitches ready to fly. And fly we did straight into a very breezy game against Worthing. With a quick first goal it looked like it was going to be an easy game for the Fours but, unlike Alice's morning balloon ride, the wind blew us in the wrong direction and despite many, many attempts we couldn't convert. Guest player Kate Wilson took a blow to the head and I couldn't help wonder - surely South Africa will be less windy than this.

"Half time talk was clearly a success as we found our shape despite being drawn into Worthing's messy formation earlier. Beautiful passes, beautiful use of space, beautiful communication and voila! Goal! (Yes Bills I like shouting beautiful on pitch but maybe I was just imagining the view from Alice's balcony ay?)

"Once we'd found our feet (or I suppose the goal?) we knocked a few more in and, with a very bored goalie, ended the game on a high (though not as high as the balloon ride obviously). Great game with classic Fours team work and good humour. But, like Lou's rejected suitcase, I'll wait another week for that holiday.

"This week's match report is dedicated to all those Fours' holiday makers - Alice B, Alice T and Amanda C. I'm not bitter at all but I hope it's windy wherever in the world you are..."

Thanks to Drinky this week for a lyrical account of the 5s' 2-0 home defeat by Lewes 3s.

"I've said it a lot this season
We lost again but I can't find the reason.
Our players so talented, skilled and strong
Let’s check with the umpires that score must be wrong!

The team so passionate and full of desire
Yet Lewes scored and their team was dire.
All the play was ours, all the pressure and possession
We thought this time round we would teach them a lesson

But with the wind and cold like the north pole
We couldn’t break through and score a goal
But onwards and upwards, this team won’t be deflated
We won’t give in and get all frustrated

We know we are great
We will seal our fate
In this league we will stay
And next week it's Eastbourne we will slay

We are not done
There are matches to still be won"

In division two there was disappointment for the 6s, who went down 3-0 away at Crowborough 2s while the 7s were awarded a 5-0 victory over Penguins 1s, who forfeited the match in division three as they were unable to raise a team.
