Brighton and Hove are still looking for their first points and goals in the South Clubs Women's League division one after a 2-0 defeat at West Witney on Saturday. It followed a 3-0 defeat at home to early pacesetters Tulse Hill and Dulwich the previous weekend.

Women's Club Captain Kate Kieran said the first half was "a middle of the pitch battle with plenty of shots at each end but with both teams holding out to go into the break 0-0.

"Witney got a penalty corner in the second half and scored off a Brighton deflection into the top right corner to take the lead. Brighton pushed forward looking for the equaliser but gave away another penalty corner from a Witney break, which saw a second goal for the home side.

"Two saves off the line from Pip Tanner and Toni Catlow saved Brighton from conceding further goals."

Thanks to the Jo and Jo show, BHHC women's 2s built on their good start to the season with a solid 4-1 win over Sussex League premier division newcomers, Middleton. Kate Wilson reports: "Despite missing several regulars, players dealing with illness and the hot conditions, the team controlled the game well with periods of real dominance. First half goals from Jo "Wheezy" Whiting and an absolute screamer for Jo Smith put Brighton in control.

"We went to sleep a little after half time and conceded. However two further goals from Jo Whiting and Jo Smith put the game out of reach."

The 3s, in the same division, did not fare so well, losing 4-1 to Lewes. Mary Beth Perkins says: "The team has not had the best of starts, first with tough opposition (a 2-0 loss to Hailsham) but the game against Lewes did not reflect the score. We have three juniors who are adapting to women's league hockey."

Beth scored a consolation goal for Brighton from short corner in the last minute of the game.

The other successful team on Saturday were the 4s, who won 4-0 against South Downs in division 1 with goals from Kate Smith/Bills, Christine Cawte and two from Sarah Cresswell.

Having just been promoted into the first division the women’s 5s started the season last week with a fantastic win over the Honeybees but this week faced a greater challenge against Burgess Hill. Amy Drinkwater reports: "Despite not looking out of place in this league and matching them for skill and strength, Burgess Hill took the win with two breakaway goals and one from a set piece. Lots of encouraging play from Brighton and loads to learn and build on for next week."

In division 2 BHHC women's 6s drew 2-2 with Hailsham after leading at half-time through goals from Larna Pantrey-Mayer and Rosie Cheeks. According to reports "Hailsham scored first, a relatively soft goal to concede, and Brighton came straight back with a somewhat messy goal that Larna eventually put in the back of the net.

"Next goal was a cracker in the bottom left corner from Rosie Cheeks of Brighton off a short corner. A few balls off feet were missed in both directions that both teams could have felt aggrieved by, but it was a run of play following one of these that allowed Hailsham to equalise. The moral of the story being always play to the whistle. A draw seemed fair in a fast-paced and hard-fought match and we look forward to the rematch away."

Brighton's players of the match were Rosie Lane and Helen Such while DOD was Michaela, for being in France.

The Gulls and the Starlings both celebrated excellent wins, 4-0 against East Grinstead Bluebirds and 5-0 against Chichester Canons respectively. Karen Edwards says the Gulls were 1-0 at half time through a great goal from left wing by Hannah Shorrocks. "Half time team talk around using the wide players did the trick and two goals from Sophie Everton, and another from Nia Simpkins sealed a really deserved win against East Grinstead."
