Can we win it? YES WE CAN(terbury)
Canterbury Canterbury Canterbury. Not much rhymes with Canterbury but I'll give it a go. Plus it's St. Patrick's day so it seemed apt...
Last Saturday we went to Canterbury
To beat the opposition and bury
them deep into mid table
but alas we were unable
and Dan being good was quite scary
We went into the this game on the back of a good win the week before and looking good for promotion still. We unfortunately had to name our smallest squad of the whole season, only taking 13 with Jack turning up just as the game started. Our first challenge was avoiding the water canons which we pretty much all failed to do, although the sight of everyone skipping away screaming was a sight to behold.
The hockey was largely good, Dan and myself had a little shouting match early on, but I don't want to start another lovers tiff in the squad (see Hore Vs Rudrum, Hore Vs Rogers, Hore Vs Everyone at training, Green Vs Tasker) so I kept quiet in the end, even though I was right. We went 1-0 up through great work from Hore, they equalised through a short corner, we then went ahead through Hore again (he was really good!) and they again equalised at some point. As per usual there were minimal shots on goal and our superb defence meant that Ben had a largely peaceful game. We are now only allowed to concede a max of 1 goal in the last 3 games though so that we finish on 22 played, 22 conceded.
We had 2 golden chances to win the game though, firstly Dan went on a mazy run into the D and got selfish in search for his hat-trick and forced the keeper into an excellent save. Some say that he should have passed it square to either of the 2 players waiting for the tap in, but Dan refutes this completely so who are we to argue. The 2nd was Kenny deciding to shoot from the baseline reverse stick. I have many problems with this
No1. Why was Kenny there in the first place?
No2. How did his legs take him that far without him getting injured/tired?
No3. Kenny can't shoot front stick, let alone on the reverse
No4. The ball is still missing. If anyone in the Kent countryside finds the ball after it lands, please return it to Polio Farm.
The final whistle blew at some point (probably after 70 mins) and we had the usual showers and teas. Fines were dished out and there was a really good atmosphere in the team. MoM went to Ed and DoD fell rather harshly to Hore. It might be easy to give it to him, but I would have to say in all the unfortunate years I've been playing hockey with Dan, I'm not sure I've seen a better performance from him. Canterbury couldn't control him at all and he easily would have won MoM if he'd scored the 3rd. Not that I'm taking anything away from Ed! I think I'll just be quiet now.
The good news was that Valence lost to Horsham (some sort of bogey team for the top teams) which now means that if we win this weekend against Mid Sussex then we are officially promoted and if we win all our games we will be crowned league champions. With a winner like Burlo as our coach, that would be a very good result indeed.
Also, just to add, the popular myth that if someone is wearing a vest in a team then they must be the best player is absolute nonsense. This week is was Coyle. Not only does he not have the ability, he doesn't have the body.
Also also, I had a dream last night that Grew scored a goal so I'm hoping it's a premonition.
Roll on Super Saturday!!!
