Brighton & Hove HC seek a Player Coach / Coach to guide the men's 1st XI to national league from South Prem Div 1. With a new, double astro facility currently being built, the club wishes to progress the men's flagship side. After a strong couple of seasons including 2 excellent cup runs leading to matches against EHL Premier Division opposition, the side are keen to find the right person to add the required emphasis to reach the next step. Last Sunday saw our Ladies 5th XI win the Sussex Shield – first ever silverware for the team – with a gutsy performance against Horsham 5s.

It was the first match of the Sussex Finals to be played at Southdown Sports Club in Lewes, on a glorious sunny day, if at a slightly anti-social hour for some of the supporters, who turned up late with sore heads!

They started with a flourishing display that would have pleased coach Wendy Russell – one-twos, roll outs and running into space, with midfielders Annefa Burke, Rachel Sutton, and Helen Such covering an awful lot of ground. In fact, it feels unfair to name a few players when everyone put in such a hard shift. As it was a hot day, it was important to rest players and keep them rehydrated, and Club Captain Julia Shorrocks was on hand to make sure subbing was slick and frequent.

Their efforts paid off with a first half goal which scuttled over the line with help from top goal-scorer Aisha Hoten. The second half saw signs of tiredness creeping into their play, as Horsham turned up the heat, determined to secure a win, having equalised. Our defence were having none of it, not least Keeper Shane Ali who put in a stunning performance, keeping out everything that was thrown at her. It was agonising to watch the waves of attack on our D and Brighton supporters (with dogs and children in tow) willed the game to a draw with everything their lungs could muster!

And so it was – the game finished 1-1, so it was down to even more nerve-wracking penalty strokes.

Captain Quita Harkess stepped up first and calmly put it away to the corner, causing a tremendous roar – of relief – from team and supporters. Then followed a series of misses and saves – Shane Ali again equal to everything Horsham tried to put past her. She did let one in, but then defender Marie Jarvis got a second in for Brighton – a lovely flick into the net. All eyes were on Keeper Shane to keep the last attempt from Horsham out – which she did with aplomb causing the rest of the team to swamp her, actually, flatten her, in relief and exhilaration.

Shane was awarded (Wo)Man of the Match, and the team managed to get some proud photographic moments on the pitch before being ushered off for the next game. I believe the rest of the afternoon was (deservedly) given over to pub hockey....

Brighton have three teams playing in the Sussex Mens Cup Finals at Lewes HC this weekend.  We are hoping to have a good BHHC turnout to cheer on the teams.

Our Ladies 1s are through to the Third Round of the England Hockey "Investec Women's Trophy" competition.

This is a national competition and if our Ladies 1s win, they are through to the quarter finals!

They will be playing Lewes 1s, who are in the Division below them, and longtime rivals.  

Let's show them some support!

Despite BHHC Men's 1st XI  losing 3-1 in a great battle against Cannock in the 3rd round of the EHB Cup and Horsham taking 1st and 2nd in the Junior Tournament - our Super Sunday proved to be a great success in bringing the hockey community together.

Thank you to all those who helped make it happen. Firstly to Galvanised Hockey for filming the game and TalkHockeyRadio who provided additonal coverage. Secondly to all the players, volunteers, family and friends of the of the club who helped make the day a success. BHHC managed to entertain a great crowd complete with comedy heckling.

We are all incredibly proud of our BHHC and hope there are many more reasons to get together for a celebration in the future!
