New Date for Boules !!
Please note in view of a couple of logistical issues and the impending downpour predicted for Sunday, this event has been postponed until the following Sunday, 31st August.
-------------------------
In order to prepare yourself for the new season's heavy social calendar, we have lined up a late summer social to get you back into the mood !
On Sunday 31th August, the annual Boules Tournament will be held with the obligatory BBQ and beers starting at 2pm. In the evening we will have a couple of bands playing in the clubhouse, knocking out some great covers !
Please put this in your diaries now !
Cost : Just a fiver !

Lenny
Many in the club will have heard the tragic news that Lenny (Ian Linington) died in early July. To everyone who knew Lenny and played in the same side as him, they would have known him to be a skipper's dream, never ever giving less than 100% and always chasing what appeared to be a hopeless lost cause until his stick suddenly appeared as if by magic, at the last possible second to deflect the shot away from goal.
Away from the pitch, we knew him to be a great guy to have a pint with in the bar, deceptively funny with a very dry wit and with a bottomless pit of goodwill. On many occasions he entertained us on long journey to and from matches, even once spending the whole of the journey to Folkestone explaining the basis of his PhD. Not being quite as bright as Lenny, we were none the wiser !!
His fitness was legendary, often cycling or running to and from training, which makes it all the more shocking that he died of a heart attack from an unknown heart defect, whilst trekking in the mountains in Morocco.
The club will be organising to do something in his memory so please let Thompo know if you have any suggestions. In the meantime our thoughts are with his family at this tragic time.

Volunteer for next Season
We have a number of vacancies for committee and captains positions next season. Volunteering is easier and less time consuming than you might think, and it's great way to contribute to the club.
We are looking for Team Captains for the Mens 3's, Ladies 3's, Mens 4's, Ladies 4's and Mens Vets. We don't need to be a tactical genius to be Captain, you just need to be a good communicator and organised enough to get your team to the meet on time and their subs paid. Please contact Wendy or Thompo if you're interesting in helping.
We are also always looking for people to help with committee positions. We are particularly looking for social secretaries to help organise and publicise our various social events. Please contact Graham if you are interested in helping the committee.

Summer Hockey
We are intending to enter a Mens team into the EG Summer League. Matches are played on weekday evenings at EG and the standard is fairly high.
Please send an email to the address below stating whether you are interested in playing regularly or occasionally and also whether you would be able to give people lifts.
We may have someone to organise this but we really need 2 people to do it so please step forward and volunteer. It is a relatively easy task.
We need to have a reasonable number of people commited to playing regularly before we enter a team. Also as in the case of previous seasons, the intention would be for regular players to pay a season ticket at the start of the league with match fees being collected from adhoc players. Regular players would be selected first.
If you have any queries about this please speak to Thompo, Matt Sale or your team captain.

Dinner Dance
It's coming to the end of another great season and we’d like to invite you to the annual club Dinner & Dance. This year’s event is taking place at the Holiday Inn. The night will begin at 19:30 with a 3 course meal, followed by a short awards ceremony and the usual Captains summary of the season, then a disco to bring the season to a close.
Dress code is smart and tickets cost £35 but there are only a limited amount so be sure to avoid disappointment. They can be bought from Luke Williams, Quita Harkess, Matt Sale, Lorraine Coley or from Graham at the bar.
It has been an enjoyable season so lets finish it off in style. See you on 2nd May!

Mens 4s in Cup Final !
After crusiing through their qualifying group with few questions asked, the Mens 4s now have a date with Eastbourne on Saturday in the Mens 4XI Cup Final.
The game is at Lewes, push back at 10:15am. Yes, it is early but what better way to start the day than to watch Captain Brooksy and his boys hopefully bring home some silverware and then follow that with a few lunchtime pints !

Mens 4s storm to cup glory !
Brighton 4s….. WIN!
Brighton 4s ended their season on a high point by demolishing a strong Eastbourne side 6-0 to win the Sussex Cup. A vocal supporting crowd braved the obscenely early start and incessant drizzle to witness Brooksy’s men bury the pain of relegation to finish the season with some silver wear in the cabinet. It was especially poignant for Manager Thompo, so often on the losing side in previous years’ finals, to be involved, along with Coach Dan Hore, in helping to orchestrate the victory. Hats off to hat-trick man Dan Benson who put in another inspired display in a Brighton 4s shirt.
Well done to all those that joined us on the pub crawl home. Being fined has never tasted so sweet

Grand Slam Saturday !!
Following on from the success of the Rocks in winning their league and the Mens 3s gaining promotion, the Mens 1s, 2s and 4s all have key games this Saturday.
The Mens 1s need to win against Oxford Hawks to guarantee safety in South Premier 'A'. Any other result would leave them sweating on how their relegation rivals do. Please make the effort to come and support them if you aren't playing. The games starts at 1:30pm at Falmer.
The Mens 4s also need to win against St Francis 1s to be sure of safety. Let's hope that they can make sure their hockey does the talking rather than getting embroiled into St Francis's unique style of play. The match starts at 1pm, venue Stanley Deason, so if you can make it Brooksie and the boys will appreciate it greatly.
Lets also wish good luck to the Mens 2s who need to win away at Eastcote and then hopefully see Winchester lose. Supposedly they are watching the Winchester game in South London after their game, so heaven knows what they will be like in the results go their way !!
Good luck to all 3 teams, and lets hope the clubhouse is full of celebrations on Sat.
Please try and come along to Worthing (St Andrews) on Sunday to support the Mens U21s. They have a good squad and will hopefully do well. Their first game will be about 11am.
Date for diaries : Mens 1s and 3s both have cup semi-finals on April 12th. More details to follow.

Rock n' Rule !
Brighton Rocks stormed to the Sussex Open League Division 3 title on Saturday with a crushing 7-0 victory against Worthing. The side have won their last 17 games to cruise to the title and now need just 11 goals in their last game to reach 3 figures.
A lot of the praise must lie at the door of Wappy who has successfully blended a side made up of mainly last years Flippers with a few experienced hands into a potent unit. Who said "You never win anything with kids ?!!"

Hockey on BBC !!!!!!!!!!!!
Great Britain Hockey is delighted to confirm that the BBC will be showing GB in the final of the crucial Olympic Qualifiers LIVE on Sunday evening.
The match, which is scheduled to start at 2100hrs GMT, will be shown via their digital red-button platform and will feature Great Britain. Their opponents have not yet been confirmed and will not be until Saturday evening when the last set of round-robin matches will take place in Santiago, Chile.
The British boys are undefeated in the tournament from which only one team can qualify for the Olympics in Beijing later this year. They began their qualifying campaign with an 11-0 thrashing of Mexico and then went on to put eight past Russia before beating hosts Chile 4-1 on Tuesday. Last night saw them overcome their biggest rivals, India winning 3-2 in the last minute of the game with a goal from Surbiton striker Rob Moore.
However, they have to win the final match on Sunday if they are to book the one available place to Beijing.

End of An Era
Yes it's the end of an era ... BHHC's very own turbulent Scotsman, Andy C is off to foreign lands ... well Gibraltar ... so he can still have tea and marmite on toast for breakfast along with a full English. He is departing very soon so he is inviting people to join him on the 29th December, in the Sussex Cricketer on Eaton Road in Hove (that’s right, next to the County Ground) from 8.00pm where he'll be delighted to buy any of you who fancy turning up, your preferred farewell tipple whilst discussing momentus events in his BHHC career such as being a treasurer who turned up on time, sparring sessions on the pitch with Thompo, captaincy from Bermuda, falling down the stairs in curry houses and getting more red cards than Roy Keane, Vinnie Jones, Norman Hunter and "Chopper" Harris put together.
It promises to be a memorable if not sad night so be there as there's nothing else to do as X-Factor and Strictly Come Dancing have both finished now !
