Worthing 4s 1-8 Men's 5th XI

Back after the festive break the 5's were keen to start the second half of the season off in style and forget their last outing in which they lost their second game of the season. However the skipper was not best pleased with the teams match preparation as all but 2 of the players had been out and got smashed the night before. Of course not the skipper !! :-)
The team were without their inspirational midfielder & drinker Bondy but were still confident of a win against a mid table Worthing side.

As early as the first minute a short corner from Brighton hit the post and in the second minute Monk passed to Benson in the D, only to see his shot go just wide.

Brighton then had a sustained period of possession. In the 6th minute a mix
up the Worthing defence led to Benson scoring the first of the game when Monk slipped the ball to him in the D. Worthing had a couple of chances at Brighton however Kumar was equal to their shots and on another occassion Reedy cleared close from the line to keep the score at 1-0. The defence was playing well with Ready, Jamie, Joe & Matt all keeping a keen eye on the Worthing attackers.

It was inevitable with the pressure that Worthing were exerting that Brighton would use the speed of Joe and Ramzy down the right on the break.

Joe picked the ball up passed to Ramzy who pulled the ball back to Benson entering the D on the left hand side. He blasted the ball at the keeper,
the ricochet fell to Birdy who appeared from no where like a true SAS solider to spank the ball into the back of the net.

Brighton's 3rd soon followed with Benson picking the ball up on the left and once again shooting at goal. The keeper managed to save his initial shot, but Tom picked up the rebound 5 yards out, his shot was going wide but Ramzy was there to divert the ball in 3-0. A text book Ramzy goal from 1 yard out!

Worthing were now pressing to get back into the game and were unlucky to meet a defence which had the bit between there teeth, however with 32 minutes on the clock they won a short corner which they tucked away HT 3-1. Can we ever keep a clean sheet ?!

The second half started brightly with Brighton attacking the Worthing goal at every opportunity, Monk was spreading the ball well and when Benson wasbrought down by the keeper a short was given. Benson, Monk and Swampy combined well and Monk slotted home from ten yards.

There was lots of space for Brighton down both wings, and it was this space that was exploited by Benson as once again he ran into the D from the left and this time his shot hit the back board. The Brighton defence was marshalling the Worthing forwards well but Kumar still had to make a couple of saves. The only time he was beaten Matt was there to clear the ball off the line.

With only minutes remaining Monk burst into the D and spanked the ball into bottom right from the top of the D. As the game neared injury time College decided to get in on the action and ran into the D, both Dan and Joe were screaming for the ball. Alas College had better ideas and defied Newtons laws by squeezing the ball into the goal via the post and the keepers boot where a gap simply did not exist. What celebrations, his first goal for 8 years !

In injury time Ramzy attacked down the right and saw his shot saved by the keeper, but he managed to get to the rebound first and slip the ball to
Wells to score into an empty net which was just rewards for Joe who had played in no less than 4 positions !

A great win for the 5's to maintain there position at the top of the league.
