Worthing 0-3 Men's Veterans XI
The euphoria from last week's emphatic victory was maintained in the style of Brighton's play during the opening spell of the game against Worthing. The ball was moved around the pitch crisply with good wide wing play from David Martin and Rob Scrivens asking all sorts of questions of the visitor's defence. However Wothing were made of more resolute material than Chichester and the acres of space soon reduced as their marking improved. This did not stop Brighton creating a hatful of opportunities. Continuous pressure created a succession of short corners. The keeper saved the direct shot from the first and a defender's foot stopped the second. The third produced another good save from the keeper but he was powerless to stop the fourth one which Adrian Adams drilled into the goal from the slip.
Brighton continued to attack with David Martin sticking to his line closer than a supermodel's nose. As Worthing retreated Hamish vans Agnew and Guy Nelson found plenty of space to move the ball around. Occasionally this resulted in a break but with new goalkeeper James Myers giving a master-class in how to dominate the D and beyond there was never much danger of Brighton conceding.
After the break the lead was doubled when Tim Ireland scored directly from the only penalty corner of the half. Five corners, five shots on goal and two goals was one of the more pleasing statistics of the game. Despite some experimentation with the formation Brighton still looked most threatening when moving the ball quickly. Adams scored the third goal, and his second, towards the end of a match that maybe last season would have been lost.
Three wins out of the last four League games means that the Vets are now beginning to deliver some of the potential the team sheet promises.
