Penguins 2s 3-4 Men's 4th XI
Brighton 4s 4 - Penguins 2s 3
Goals: Ade Farthing, James Rickards, Andy Cunningham, Tom Scopes
There is a moment in the Lord of the Rings “The Two Towers” which sees the ork army over running the keep of Helm’s Deep. All seems lost. Our heroes set for an untimely death with the knowledge that Middle Earth will fall into shadow…..
Don’t think orks think Penguins. Yes the Penguins 2s. After a lively start to the battle royale the Super 4s were 1-0 up thanks to well taken short corner from Ade with Tom injecting. Yet as soon as the Second Half began Stanley Deason fell into shadow. Despite some brave defence from Rich we were suddenly 3-1 down thanks to 2 well taken Penguin goals adding to their first half equaliser.
To make matters all the more desperate Pete who had a great game was taken injured. Hockey can be a cruel mistress and all was looking lost….
What did the Super 4s do? Lie down and accept the inevitable? Nay, nay and thrice nay! Like the beleaguered army of Helm’s Deep we looked to the East at dawn of the 5th day. The midfield of James, Tom and Russell well supported by Chris threw caution to the wind and began running at the Penguins. Our pressure told and James accepting the ball at a narrow angle from a short corner drilled the ball past a flailing keeper. The 4s were back in the hunt and penguin was on the menu.
Andy C then came agonisingly close to scoring. He was reminded by a person who shall remain nameless that he couldn’t score in a bordello. Moments later he proved that he could obtain the services of a lady of the night by scoring!!!
The penguins were no longer emperors but more like freshly hatched chicks. Their lead had evaporated. There were but 4 minutes left. The 4s were rampant. We couldn’t possibly win or could we?
Young girls were screaming with excitement at the scenes unfolding on the pitch and also at the sight of Thompo wading in at the back. Seconds were left and the ball came in from the right to Tom. He had eons. We all held our breath as he deliberately raised the ball over the keeper. 4-3. The whistle blew. The crowd went wild. The Penguins were devastated. A fantastic result putting the “super” into the 4s. Well done all. James.
