Worthing 2's 5-2 Men's 3rd XI

Having put Brighton 2’s out of the Sussex 2nd XI cup, Brighton 3’s were very aware of how capable their opposition would be this week. Worthing 2’s came to Fortress Deason brimming with confidence. With their place at the top of the table unquestionable it was going to be a very tall order for Brighton 3’s. However the 3’s never shy away from a challenge and were looking to make it three on the trot. With an unchanged side from the side that beat Middleton & Bognor (The first time this has happened in about three years!!!) Brighton were confident that they were more than capable of taking the game to Worthing.

The game started very fast, with Worthing trying to control the tempo of the game making sure that Brighton couldn’t play. It was Worthing that made the break through with a goal from their Chris Moyles lookalike when Brighton allowed Worthing to break through the defence. The lead however was short lived as Brighton started to play and gained more of the possession, winning a short corner which was dispatched as always by the ever present Begs.

Brighton continued to have the better of the possession for the 1st half, although the odd chances that Worthing did have were misused by selfish individualistic play. At times Brighton were hampered by some rather suspect umpiring decision that were starting to cause frustration amongst the Brighton team, although Worthing also had some decision go against them which they felt necessary to argue with the umpire about. As temperatures began to rise, it looked like it would be a very explosive 2nd half.

Brighton continued to have the better of the possession in the 2nd half and some good attacking play exploited the Worthing defence to find Davros in open space at the top of the ‘D’ who put away the ball to give Brighton the lead. Worthing however seemed to stir into life and started to gain more possession. With that possession they managed to find an equaliser much to Brighton’s dismay as the umpiring decisions became more suspect and as the umpires slowly lost control of the game, Brighton found themselves down to 10 as an outrageous decision found Bondy sin binned for being pushed over by a Worthing player before asking the Umpire how he could let that happen!! As more and more mistakes were made by the umpires Brighton lost their composure and discipline which allowed Worthing to capitalise in the last 10 minutes to score another 3 goals which in the context of the game could have been avoided, as Worthing definitely knew that they had been in a game.

Final score 2-5 a little flattering for Worthing as Brighton with a better temperament could have easily got a result from the game.
