Lewes 3's 2-1 Men's 3rd XI
So early in the season saw the clash between local rivals which offered a powder keg of passion as neither side wanted to lose! Both sides didn’t disappoint as they shared attacks which were broken down by solid defences. Brighton were to suffer a blow early on when Begs was caught on the foot, limping off Brighton put on their only sub hoping not to sustain any more injuries (that was the third in three weeks!!!).
It looked liked Lewes had taken the lead when they found the back of the net only to find it disallowed by the umpires. Somewhat aggrieved Lewes could not contain their dismay. A lucky reprieve for Brighton, they pushed on and it was Brighton that made the break through with an Ade Farthing goal. Lewes were to find themselves down to ten men and then nine before the break as the umpires decided to raise the temperature of the game with some dubious decisions.
Brighton went into the break with the lead and confident for the second half. The second half started off in the same manner as the first with both sides swapping blows. Some more dubious umpiring decisions added to the high temperature of the game, which saw both sides go down to ten men at various points in the second half.
Lewes equalised with a well worked manoeuvre and then continued to keep the pressure on to try and force the game, unfortunately they did as Lewes found themselves driving down the line along the back line and placing the ball through Hehirs legs. Unfortunately, the end was nearing and as Brighton tried to push for an agonising equaliser. Brighton were to lose James Grimes who after sliding into a tackle taking the ball cleanly, found a Lewes player on top of him (This we later found out had broken a rib) and then Brighton lost Graham Pruce to a yellow card. As the dying embers of the game died it looked as if Brighton would come off the worst which was sealed with the final whistle.
