Eastbourne 3's 2-5 Men's 3rd XI

It was a typical Saturday afternoon at Stanley Deason (I’m sure you can picture it!) the wind was howling, the rain was pouring and it felt like winter was creeping up on us. Oh how we love the fortress!

The game was due to push back at 1pm but the start was delayed forcing players and umpires alike to huddle together for shelter. The reason for the delay....Hehir was late!!

In no time at all Hehir had managed to put his kit on and install himself in the goal and the game could begin. Brighton were the brighter of the two teams out of the starting blocks and had the majority of possession in the opening stages of the game.

A game that saw the return of slim line Bondi in the centre of midfield and Prucey find himself in the sweeper position where he would command the game. The game also welcomed JC into the side alongside Bondi and a fresh and eager James Calloway who was to provide a deft touch in the forward line. Davros also made a return to the side after his sabbatical (Apparently he has to work on a Saturdays!!).

Anyway back to the game the first goal was scored by Brighton. Young James Calloway picked the ball up on the half way line and flung it down the line where Davros picked it up and started to drive towards the goal. At this point having just entered the field of play Ade Farthing was making a mad dash for the back post. With only a defender and the keeper to beat Davros pushed the ball at angle where a diving Ade managed to get his stick to connect with the ball sending into the goal (by the way Ade didn’t need to dive!).

Not content with a one goal lead Brighton got stuck into the opposition, looking for a second Brighton continued to have more of the possession and it wasn’t long before Brighton scored again (at this point I have to apologise as I did not see the goal due to Pete Stevens distracting me!) needless to say Ade had picked up a second.

With possession swapping sides and attacks being broken down by both defences it was Brighton that would go into the half time break 3-0. It was a classic Davros top of the ‘D’ strike that would see the lead extend.

After the break Brighton started off in the same fashion which saw them take a 3-0 lead probing the Eastbourne defence looking for more goals. However it was Eastbourne that managed to get a goal back shattering Hehirs dreams of a clean sheet for another week!!

Brighton didn’t let this worry them and continued to attack. It was at this point, like a spoilt little boy, Ade could be found jumping up and down on the side line mumbling ‘put me on, put me on, I want a hat-trick!’ Ade got his wish and didn’t disappoint getting his third shortly after coming on. Hat-trick Ade happy and a three goal lead restored Brighton relaxed, a little too much, allowing Eastbourne to pull another goal back. With time running out Brighton could still win if they could maintain the two goal lead. It was at this point a certain player (Bondi) thought that the lead was only one goal and proceeded to take on the entire Eastbourne team up the line. The way he played somewhat frustrated the Eastbourne team who conceded fouls as they tried to get the ball off a determined Bondi.

When the ball finally found itself into the open space of the hockey field, Brighton found themselves attacking for what could be the last time in the game. As fortune would have it the ball fell to JC who dispatched the ball into the back of the net assuring Brighton of the win and the first 3 points of the season.
