Oxsted 1-4 Men's 2nd XI
Brighton 2’s took the top spot for the first time this season after winning away to Oxted and West Hampsted lost to Gore Court at home. With Captain Alan ‘smasher’ McGuiness still carrying an injury Dan ‘not drinking at the moment’ Hore was left to Skipper the side for this tough away match.
Brighton were also without the very dependable Dermot ‘what planet is he from’ Cameron, so thanks goes to Ollie ‘it hit my foot again’ Russell for “stepping” in and doing a great job at left back.
A mention to Dave ‘SOS’ Brocket-Pugh for stepping in on Friday night to play a great game in goal commanding his D very well and looking after the short corner defence superbly.
So, to the game, the first half was an even game with both teams playing some great pass and move hockey. Coach Luke ‘getting to old for this’ Williams kept Oxted’s danger man Simon ‘he hits the ball very hard’ Trigg reasonably quite and the longer the game went on the further back he went to pick up the ball keeping him away from the danger zones (I dare not mention the chevron’s that Luke talked about at training).
Brighton Scored their first goal with some great skill from Lloyd ‘not another Sussex student’ Meurig on the base line managing to get the ball back to Ross ‘showboat’ Hardwick who actually passed the ball square for Si ‘the ninja’ Accott to one touch slap in the bottom right-hand corner of the goal. At half time Brighton were leading 1 - 0.
The second half was very much like the first, an even game, but Brighton started to keep the ball better and get more possession in the final third. The second Brighton Goal came from Dan Hore losing the ball at the top of the Oxted D and diving to get a touch and managing to find Jamie ‘where is my diet coke’ Hendricks who, with some great close control moved his feet around to bring the ball on his strong side and roll the ball into the bottom left-hand corner of the goal from 6 yards out.
With Brighton 2 goals up and away from home (the last two times this has happened they drew the games) the panic alarm was hit. Brighton lost some shape and Simon Trigg did some great work in the Brighton D to score and make the game 2-1.
With the game being so close and Brighton’s recent lack of ability to close out away games it looked like it was going to go down to the wire. However Brighton managed to play the way they are used to and didn’t lose their heads and continued to hold the ball in midfield and create more circle entries. With this the third Brighton Goal came from a short corner I’m not going to say what was done just in-case one of our future opposition is reading - sorry boys….
In the last 5 minutes Brighton sealed the victory when Lloyd managed to intercept a pass from the centre back in the inside right channel between the 25 and half way line, he quickly rolled the ball diagonally left to Dan Hore on the 25 yard line in the centre of the pitch who first time slapped the ball back post for Ollie ‘still not scoring enough’ Postlethwaite to touch in at the back post.
It was another great game to play in with the umpires keeping the game flowing allowing both sides to play quick hockey.
The only other story from Saturday is to do with the state Mike Deller was in on Saturday night before the cup game but you will be able to see that on youtube / facebook very soon.
