Penguins 2s 0-1 Men's 4th XI
With Captain Brooksy, Reidy (Albion Duty) and Dan Simpson otherwise engaged a new look 4s gathered for a ‘six pointer’ against Penguins 2s. The weather was global warming’s finest and the pitch at Fortress Deason looked unplayable when the troops arrived. It’s good to know that The Deason pitch still has teeth and was a truly scary site. Also, with an unfit Bondy and a feverish JC there were various calls for the game to be called off from the outset.
But the wind and rain temporarily subsided for the teams to make a start.
With Phil Orris in a more familiar position between the posts and Don Turnball playing at sweeper, defensively the side looked strong and started well and within ten minutes had made several attacks. During one Tosh managed to find the goal from a shot from the right hand side. You would have thought Penguins would have enjoyed playing in the conditions but they seemed ill at ease.
Then JC pulled his hamstring and went off about five yards from the half way line, which prompted him and on-coming Dan Benson to get green cards. This was quickly followed by a yellow card for Will Dobson for alleged bad language. Little more to report as both teams suffered increasingly from the conditions with Graham Stevens getting a brief run out due to Matt Harding’s impending hypothermia. Many thanks for Graham for coming along at short notice- much appreciated.
When the goal at the sea end had blown over for the second time the game was finally called off after 16 mins. Probably a good thing even though we were 1-0 up. A rescheduled encounter can only be more enjoyable and as Tosh diplomatically shouted at the end “we will just have to “beat” them again”. Well we think that’s what he said…
Many thanks for Andy Hehir for umpiring in such filthy weather.
