M&B 1s 1-4 Men's 4th XI

Mise-en-scene. This is a concept you may not be aware of. It is the way that a film director introduces sub-text to a scene. You must remember that everything you see in a film is there for a reason and things that aren’t there aren’t there for a reason. For example in films you will often see the good guy travel from left to right, and as this is the way we read it feels “right” the bad guy or evil character will generally travel right to left as, to our western ways, this feels “wrong”. Mise-en-scene is also used as a way into the protagonists mind. The weather is the most favoured method for giving us insight into the mind. Rain is a very common signifier of depression, pain and internal torment.

The weather can also be seen as a barometer of the Brighton 4s. When the sun was out on Saturday Brighton played well scoring 4 goals. When the rain came a goal was conceded and the performance suffered.

Brooksy had assembled a team of defenders to shore up the defensive barriers against the onslaught that was coming from the west.

The onslaught, however, never materialised as a ten man M&B resorted to long balls which were well snuffed out by Ready and Potter who were both again on imperious form.

The midfield of pairing of Lees and CJ were the first to everything it was only a matter of time before the first goal was scored. CJ powered into the D and passed for Matt Harding to score, again from an obscenely short distance. Graham Stevens was also on marauding form and powered down the left flank and crossed for that man Harding to do what is expected and slot it past the goalie. Brighton were in a state of shock, as were the M&B players. M & B continued to offer nothing in attack bare from some short corners which (for once) were seen off by the pads of Brooksy. What was a great first half turned into an amazing first half as Brighton extended their lead to 3-0 when Matt Harding took advantage if some hesitant defending to fire in from 12 yards, yes you read correctly, 12 yards!
M&B were getting into the game and a Sheff’s shoulder was enough to deflect the ball away. Perhaps it should have been a penalty flick but, thems the breaks.

Three nil up and looking good at half time as the rain and wind spat down the 4s knew that M&B had to do something this half and would come out all guns blazing. And blazing they did. Brighton survived an onslaught for ten minutes with short corner after short corner awarded for some atrocious tackling. Something had to give and after Brooksy and Potter had been equal to the straight strike they slipped it left and the lead was cut to two.

After the second half offensive had waned Brighton again got into the game. The sun reappeared and CJ and Sam Parkin were literally everywhere and playing absolute blinders. Luckily for us Graham was also on form and able to restore the 3 goal cushion.

M&B had really given up the ghost and Brighton coasted in for what was an easy win. I suspect things will be much harder at their gaffe but we’ll take the three points gladly.

Brighton really showed some quality today and from a terrible start to the season have recovered well and have taken four points off the top two teams proving how good we could be.
