Newhaven 1s 1-2 Men's 4th XI
Brighton 4s 2 - Newhaven 1s 1
Scorers : Dave Taylor , Chris O’Neill
On the 20th October, the super 4's were matched against a Newhaven 1st
XI and were keen to reek revenge from 2 defeats at their hands last
season.
Thompo ever being the master tactician opted for a 4-4-2 formation and
put his faith in a strong midfield and the lightening pace of AndyC and
Pilsbury up front. This was a new look team and much to the surprise to
the regulars, Thompo had even allowed enough time to travel to get to
the pitch.
The 4's lined up with LJ, Reedy, Thompo, Rich and Chris rotating at the back, with Ed, Alan, Tom and Dave T across the middle and Glen as keeper. From the whistle, Brighton soon dominated the game with some excellent pressing and quick thinking, which led to a number of forays in to the Newhaven 25. The new signings Ed and Tom quickly proved their worth and Alan orchestrated the middle, even though he was having those welcome to
Brighton moments, with no hot water in his flat and his reeling from his
hurricane destroyed Masurati.
The breakthrough came in the 20th minute, with a neatly worked short
corner, slipped left from Farthing to Dave T, who timely stroke a shot
under the keeper to put Brighton 1-0 up. At this point Newhaven realised
they were in a game and quickly applied the pressure back on Brighton.
This purple patch resulted in a disallowed goal, having come off a Newhaven foot to loop over Glen and nearly take Thompo’s head off ! Then some great saves from Glen were puncuated with a goal line clearance from Thompo. Brighton still went on to dominate the first half and game in for the break, knowing they deserved to be in the lead.
The 2nd half was a different story, Newhaven dominated from the whistle
however the super 4's backs soaked up the pressure, and alas a couple of easy chances went begging, first AndyC shot wide and then a poor pass from Dave T failed to find Farthing in front of and open goal. Eventually the second goal came when a short corner saw an Alan and Farthing combine to setup Chris for a well taken strike into the bottom left. Newhaven's game deteriorated at this point and their frustration was vented on the Brighton umpire who having none of it, dished out the green cards. The melee was equalled at the other end by some axe wielding AndyC tackles and a fracas on the top of the Brighton D, which left AndyC seeing Green and
Chris seeing Yellow for 15 minutes. Newhaven soon took advantage of the
extra man with a well worked move on the left, cut back a pass to be
fired through the legs of Glen Beale. Brighton held on to the lead with
some resolute defending, time wasting clearance to the other end of
the field and another goal line clearance from a short (by who I wonder ?!), then the final whistle blew and Brighton took all three points.
The awards were presented as follows:
Teapot: Alan for having no shoes and then complaining about blisters caused by the size 8 and a halves.
Handbag: Chris for his Yellow
Dancing Homer: AndyC for tripping over his own feet with no-one near
him
Strange but true ! Myles (Kobe to his friends) lent Alan his astros … only for Alan to find out they were size 8 and a half !!! How can such tiny feet support such a barrel chested super-structure ???? If it was a building, the inspectors would have had it pulled down by now !!
