Eastbourne 3's 1-5 Men's 3rd XI
The breakfast had only just been digested for our early morning start, when Captain Dan and Begs (his more than able right hand man) announced a change in formation was needed and 3 were to play up front. This meant a recall for Delea who had been fine tuning in the 4s and the silver fox (what goes around comes around !!!) taking a view from the side, muttering something about the dice had been thrown up in the air.
Brighton started at an unusual pace (this being quick) and creating some slick passing movements. It soon became evident that this attacking formation would pay dividends due to the tactical expertise of our Captain. Our half backs pressed forward and in particular a youngster called Mooney decided to take the initiative on the left hand side and unleash a number of searching passes (something we have been missing all season) into the opposition’s ‘D’ to our mobile forwards. This resulted in 3 quick goals all with assists to Mooney and a stonker of a strike from Begs at a short corner. Half time came at the wrong time with the team’s athletic rhythm in full flow, but 4-0 was something to work with.
At this stage the Captain threw the dice up in the air again and changed the personnel and gave a rallying speech for our second half effort. Unfortunately it did become an effort and the game was missing that first half movement and slickness. On occasions our new right half decided to employ the idea of ‘Total Hockey’, but forgot this needed to take place on the pitch and proceeded to keep running off the side of the pitch ignoring such things as the side line - hey ho it later became apparent he had other things on his mind. Eastbourne briefly threatened when Andy Hehir scored but Begs the cool customer eased nerves when slotting one back for us from one of our rare flowing movements in the second half to give us a deserved 5-1 win.
