Southwick II 3-1 Men's 5th XI
The Fantastic 5’s verses Southwick 2’s
Another fine day away in Portslade to battle with league contenders Southwick. The current form of the fives meant we had a real chance to challenge for this game. But unlike last week our opponents turned up with a full team, well more than a full team, 15 to be precise. We had 12 but we knew they would keep changing and try to run us ragged.
The game started as ever with Brighton soaking up a bit of pressure before we found our feet. We netted soon after with a lovely move leading to another Will Selby goal for the season. We continued to press looking for a second and even a third but Southwick continued to be an equal threat leaving the score 0-1 at the half way stage.
At half time Southwick changed players (for like the 4th time already) bringing on more fresh, young, legs to run Paul, Will and Matt (Snr) into the ground at the back. They pressed hard and were looking the better side. They got the break through when, on the counter attack, they managed to luckily get the ball to there left forward who passed into the net. 1-1.
Brighton looked to fight back but were being denied by a much improved Southwick defense. The passing from Brighton was looking a shadow of what it was in the first half as Southwick applied better pressure to the men on the ball.
Then from a short corner Southwick got there second, the striker cleverly rounded Paul and then produced a magnificent air shot. The whistle went, dangerous stick, but wait the striker has another bite at the cherry and nets it. The goal was given despite the first whistle; a very shady decision had left Brighton with an up hill struggle.
The team couldn’t muster up anything else after being run around the park all game and when a bit of loose defending led to a Southwick third it was good night Seattle.
Final score: 3-1 loss
The first loss of 2007, lets hope it’s the last.
