Worthing Llamas 1-3 Junior Gulls XI
Things were looking bad on Friday as players were dropping like flies and the team down to a bare 9 players at 'going to the pub' time, with still a second umpire to find. Well, going to the pub was obviously a good choice as there we found Jo, who, under the persuasive powers of a few bottles of white wine, agreed. Just the players to find now. As luck would have it, Tiff and Ashleigh both phoned on Saturday morning (cutting a little fine if I could be so bold) to say that they could play after all. Brilliant news. So that's 11 players, 2 umpires, a goalkeeper, a set of blue shirts and a whole 3 hours to go before the game. Not bad.
We were encouraged to see the opposition turn up with at least half of them shorter than me. We did keep our 'tiny people' end up with our brand new player Tiff however. This week it was Alex's turn with the short corners, who didn't disappoint scoring two belters (sort of). Our third was scored by Zoe of the Beglin clan, obviously going with her genetic make up and following in her dad’s footsteps. As the opposition started arguing amongst themselves we knew we were onto a winner. They tried everything, even rearranging positions on the pitch but to no avail, and we emerged 3-1 victors. Even the Sat Nav was against them as they managed to reach Bavant Road but failed at the last hurdle taking a further 20 minutes to find the clubhouse - only beetroot sandwiches left. (They should have taken my low-tech map).
The moral of the tale from this week is that we are very good at playing teams from the Animal Kingdom. Bring on the Crowborough Chicks next week.
