Eastbourne 3's 1-5 Men's 3rd XI
Scorers: Begs (2), Dave Delea, Tom Scopes, Dan Hore
A lovely bright sunny day heralded the chance for Brighton 3s to get their season going after a run of inconsistent results.
They welcomed joint player of the year from last season (with Mr Delea) Brooksy back for a guest appearance making the step up from the 4s (thanks Mr Hehir) and also Mr Hore for a stint in midfield.
As is often the way with this fixture there is a fair amount of rivalry but this was tempered by the chumminess between the teams during the warm up. We also pitied the Eastbourne livers when looking deeper into their eyes. (More early starts for student populated teams please fixture secretary - Ed). Begs took hold of the situation and soon reminded us that we here to do some business and win the match.
Brighton started well and commanded the tempo of the play and took a deserved lead mid way through the first half from a well struck Begs short corner. As Brighton pressed to extend the lead the pattern of the game became settled and Eastbourne looked to capitalise on speedy breakaways. Brooksy was equal to a couple of breaks but as half time neared Eastbourne took their chance and we went in 1-1. There was no panic in the ranks and as a team we knew we had what was needed to win the match, as Sean guzzled premium organic orange juice. Only the finest for the 3s left back.
Brighton continued the second half in complete control and were rarely troubled at the back. Liam Cotter even had the chance for a crazy mazy run that began with some risky passes at the back and ended with him almost in their D! It isn’t clear if Liam knew where he was going but hey, he got there.
A few substitutions were made and it was a youthful red headed left half & left bag duo of Laurie and Sam who did well in not giving Eastbourne any chance of making inroads on their left flank and with Scopsey and Hore snuffing out anything further up field Eastbourne were bereft of ideas.
Eastbourne’s play became disjointed and Brighton were in the driving seat. Despite some excellent saves from their young keeper he could do nothing to stem the flow of goals. The pick of the bunch being an absolute screamer from the top of the D from Mr Delea.
As full time drew near there were calls for double figures but time wasn’t on our side.
Here’s to the thrilling threes, onwards and upwards boys!
Thanks to Pillsbury and Alan for umpiring.
