Canterbury 4a's 4-1 Men's 3rd XI
Captain Simpson’s troops were forced to travel light for their match at Canterbury. The lack of reservists soon proved costly as Bondie was forced off by injury within minutes of the push back. Canterbury wasted no time in taking advantage of our misfortune and built up a 3-0 lead inside 10 minutes.
Lesser teams would have buckled at this point but not the 3’s. Inspired by choice words from Lieutenant Beglin and some probing runs by Sam, Brighton showed Churchillian spirit and pressed on for the 4 goals required for victory. It didn’t take long for Brighton to get themselves back in the match with debutant Paul showing the sort of skills common place in the 2s with an exquisite reverse stick strike.
The second half saw Bondie bravely return to the field. Unfortunately the injury he had sustained earlier meant he could only be used as a stationary target man. Brighton continued to counter attack but a goal wouldn’t come. Instead we managed to concede another at our end.
Despite the loss, Brighton should be pleased with the way they played after the first 10 minutes. Credit should be given to Andy and Liam for keeping the score line respectable. One Canterbury player, who was apparently pretty useful in his day, was particularly frustrated by Liam’s defensive qualities. However there is no reason we can’t take all 3 points in the return leg at Fortress Deason with 11 players on the pitch.
