Chichester 4th XI 4-1 Men's 4th XI
It all started so well, the late 4.30 push back that we all dreaded turning out to be a blessing in disguise on a stupidly warm late September day...
...and it didn't stop there. Spurred on by memories of sluggish starts in last season's league campaign, the boys in blue stormed into the ascendancy. The passing was slick, the movement sublime, chance upon chance fell to the forward line, before the inexorable happened in what will take some beating as goal of the season - Shef clearing a quick 16 out to the right, after terrific work by the defence, won a sideline hit which Thompo quickly(!) despatched to an onrushing Cunningham who waited for the overlap from Tosh before feeding him down the line. Young Davey then overlapped again to drag the Chi defence into all sorts of distress and drove to the byline before pulling back the perfect centre which Holt slammed into the roof of the net as if he meant it!!! Carlos Alberto - eat your heart out.
Sadly, that proved to be about it for the blues. By half time we had conceded twice and had a long debate about the possibilty of a penalty flick for a raised stick in the Chi "D" which was (correctly) not awarded.
The second half was a torrid affair. The home side grew increasingly desparate as they saw the match slip away from them. Only Hehir in goal seemed to be keeping the score respectable as everywhere across the pitches, men in blues shirts threw themselves desparately into misguided tackles.
Can't remember any of the travellers goals, none of them were as awesome as that first of the season for the Super 4's! Unfortunately for us however, games are not won on artistic merit
In the end, we were glad to hear the final whistle, finishing up as we did on the wrong side of a 4-1 drubbing. Better days surely lie ahead...
