Lewes 2-1 Men's Veterans XI
Historically Lewes have used the Brighton fixture as an opportunity to improve their goal difference in the Kent/Sussex Veterans League. Things have changed and this season Lewes can consider themselves fortunate to have won all three points from a well contested match.
The game started brightly enough with both sides committed to playing open hockey. Lewes had the edge for the first twenty minutes or so with guest 'keeper Andy Hehir sparing the defence's blushes several times. Brighton clawed their way back and with two minutes to go to half-time definitely had the home-side on the back foot. It transpired the back foot was not a bad place to be as Lewes surged forwards and scored a critical goal just before the interval.
The second half was pretty much as per the first with both sides trying to play in an attractive good humoured style. Steve Mooney and the tireless John Spearman snuffed out most of the moves down the right wing, normally the source of many of Lewes' goals. Unfortunately a lapse of concentration in this area resulted in a second goal for Lewes and although Adrian Adams pulled one back with a trademark reverse stick shot this was a game always out of Brighton's reach. Lewes remain top and Oxted, placed second, are next weeks visitors to round off the league season for a rejuvenated (sic) Veterans team.
