Herne Bay 2 4-2 Men's 3rd XI
Brighton started brightly and had the best of the opening exchanges and the majority of the possession.
Begs gave them a deserved lead with a well struck shot into the bottom corner giving the Herne Bay ‘keeper no chance. With that confidence booster Brighton seemed to settle. Unfortunately Herne Bay equalised after a flowing move down the wing and the striker finished well past the Brighton ‘keeper. Against the run of play Herne Bay broke again and from the resulting short corner ‘keeper Dave “Bandy” Brooks managed to let one squeeze through his legs and Brighton went in at half-time 2-1 down.
At this stage Brighton were by no means out of it and pushed hard for an equaliser but two quick goals from Herne Bay soon killed off any resistance.
Brighton never looked like conceding again and when Graham Pruce dribbled artfully from the top of the D and scored from a tight angle with about ten minutes to go it gave them some hope of a comeback in the closing minutes, but it wasn’t to be.
This result has dropped Brighton to 5th in the table and with some big games coming up they could still pull the season out of the bag but as was commented in the dressing room after the game “mid-table mediocrity beckons”. With a team as talented as this 3’s team though it would be a travesty if the season finished that way.
